JACKSON, Mich. (WSYM) -- A local family is trying to pick up the pieces after a fire destroyed their home last week.

"You see your life, you memories, everything, right there in a pile of ashes," Jesus Murguia said.

Jesus was on his way to pick up his wife from work with his daughter when he saw smoke coming out if his kitchen. He told FOX 47 News he was able to get his brother out of the house before the home was engulfed in flames.

"You just panic. I just ran in there and there was black smoke everywhere. I couldn't even breathe," he said.

By the time the fire department arrived, Jesus says the fire was rampant. This was particularly devastating to the Murgiua's because the family did not have insurance.

"It just ate it all up...its incredible," Jesus said.

The family just bought new furniture, appliances, and electronics which were all destroyed. Light bulbs in the bathroom were melted from the heat of the flames.

According to Jesus, material items can always be replaced, and he's just happy his family is OK. The family has made arrangements to stay in a relative's house nearby. Now, they are saving up to buy a new home to make new memories in.

"We did it once, we'll do it again. It's material things. As long as we are alive, that's all that matters. It could've went different. As long as my family's safe, that's all that matters."

The fire was caused by electrical problems according to the family.
