LANSING, Mich. — A Lansing tradition, the Cardboard Classic returns to Gier Community Center for the 13th time this Saturday, Jan. 19. This annual event brings together sled racing enthusiasts for creative winter fun, races, and sometimes crashes. The light-hearted, all-ages competition is a great way to get out of the house, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy Michigan’s winter season.
Since 2006, the Cardboard Classic has become one of Mid-Michigan’s favorite wintertime festivities. Each year sled builders manage to create bigger and better sled themes; past year’s entries have included a Star Wars T-47 Airspeeder, Scooby’s Mystery Machine, a time machine, and a team of ghostbusters.
The staff and volunteers of LCC Radio, 89.7 FM and Gier Community Center will be handing out a number of awards including “Fastest Sled,” “Best Wipeout,” “Most Creative” and “People’s Choice.”
There is a $5 entry fee per sled with proceeds benefiting Lansing’s community radio station and the Gier Advisory Board Youth Fund. Registration and judging begins at 1 p.m. with racing getting underway at 2 p.m. Spectators are welcome. For more information go to lccradio.org or call 89.7FM at (517) 483-1000.
The event goes on as planned, snow or no snow!
