Falling tree kills Lansing teen, injures man

A fatal traffic crash on M-40 in Cass County's Newberg Township took the life of a 16-year-old from Lansing and left a man injured.

According to the Sheriff the crash happened around 6:30 a.m. on  Wednesday. The investigation showed that the pick-up truck was driven by Michael Rinehart, a 52-year-old from Lansing. Nicholas Hewitt was the passenger.

The vehicle was going northbound on M-40 hwy when it was struck by a falling tree. The pick-up then left the roadway and struck a number of trees.

Rinehart was transported to Three Rivers ER for injuries. Hewitt was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both were wearing seat-belts, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
