Faith-based workshop to help identify, prevent elder abuse

Posted

The Detroit Area Agency on Aging and Greater Burnette Baptist Church are holding a workshop on identifying and preventing elder abuse.

The workshop will be held Aug. 10 at 4 p.m. during the Baptist, Missionary and Educational Convention of the State of Michigan's annual session at Messiah Baptist Church in Detroit.

More than 60 Detroit-area churches are part of the convention. They represent more than 10,000 congregants.

The workshop includes a panel discussion on protecting seniors from financial, emotional and physical abuse, and how to intervene and report abuse.

Detroit Area Agency on Aging President Paul Bridgewater says "seniors make up the vast majority of faith-based organizations ... therefore, churches can play a critical role in the prevention of elder abuse and neglect by educating their congregations."
