HOLT, Mich. — A mid-Michigan faith-based adoption agency, and couple, are now challenging a recent settlement banning foster and adoption agencies from refusing to work with gay couples.
A federal lawsuit was filed by Saint Vincent Catholic Charities, a former foster child and a Holt couple on Monday.
The suit is over a recent settlement from a 2017 lawsuit filed against the state by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of two gay couples after the couples were rejected by agencies who didn't want to work with gays over religious beliefs
.
Saint Vincent Catholic Charities was one of the agencies.
The settlement says those agencies cannot refuse service over religious beliefs if they're under a contract with the state.
The lawsuit filed Tuesday claims the new rules violated the group's constitutional rights.
The lawsuit asks the court to stop the state from ending contracts with agencies that refer to same-sex couples to other adoption agencies because of their religious beliefs.
It also requests damages and legal costs.
