LANSING, Mich. — Facebook is rolling out a new tool that will make it easier for people to find opportunities to donate blood.

The blood donations feature is rolling out today in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., and will go nationwide in the coming months.

Users who sign up for the new tool will be alerted if one of Facebook's blood bank partners is looking for a specific kind of donor in their local area.

The tool previously launched outside of the U.S. in 2017.

Research shows that blood is needed every two seconds in the U.S. and just one donation can potentially save three lives.

Facebook says it's just connecting users to blood banks, and you have to opt into the program.
