EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State University has released a statement that former president, Lou Anna K. Simon will officially retire.
The announcement was sent out on July 30 from the MSU Newsroom that Simon would retire after 45 years with the university, effective Aug. 31, 2019.
Simon will hold the titles of president emeritus and faculty emeritus as well as receive three annual payments for a total gross amount of $2.45 million under the terms of her retirement agreement.
She will also get full retirement benefits and agreed not to sue MSU.
Simon stepped down as MSU President in January 2018 during the Larry Nassar sentencing.
“Our campus community is continuing its healing, and the Board of Trustees feel the retirement of Dr. Simon is best for the university,” said Dianne Byrum, chairperson of the Board of Trustees.
After resigning as President, she returned to MSU as tenured faculty.
The release states that last fall she took a voluntary unpaid leave of absence while facing criminal charges in Eaton County.
She just wrapped up court proceedings to determine if there is enough evidence for a trial for lying to police.
