'Equal Pay Day' in Lansing today

Posted

Protestors are expected to gather outside of the state Capitol building in Lansing demanding equal pay for women.

Organizers say the Equal Pay Day is supposed to highlight how women earn less money on average than men.

According to the US census, women earned only 80-percent of what men in 2015. The census data also shows the wage gap is even bigger for women of color.

Lawmakers and equal pay advocates will be wearing red and handing out 3/4 of a chocolate chip cookie in support of the cause.

The rally is sponsored by more than a dozen organizations including the ACLU of Michigan and the Lansing Association of Human Rights. It starts at 12:30 p.m. on the state Capitol steps.
