Consumers Energy and the Department of Corrections are saving the state nearly $900,000 a year, with energy efficiency upgrades to state prisons.

23 improvement projects in counties that include Jackson and Ionia will save enough electricity to power nearly 250 houses and heat nearly 500 homes.

Consumers Energy says its energy efficiency programs have saved Michiganders $1.5 billion since 2009.
