EAST LANSING, Mich. — An embezzlement and larceny case is being investigated by the East Lansing Police Department.
They say that it involves a former City of East Lansing employee.
East Lansing Police Department Deputy Chief Steve Gonzalez told Fox 47 the suspect was part of the parking division.
The parking division deals with parking garages, surface lots and meters within the city of East Lansing.
Gonzalez said that the same suspect also stole a laptop from the city's lost and found on Sept. 14.
The laptop belonged to someone not affiliated with the city.
The two incidents are being investigated together, although Gonzalez said the stolen laptop was not used in the embezzlement.
Since the city of East Lansing does not have an ordinance against embezzlement, any charges filed will be by the state.
Gonzalez said all information will be turned over to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office once the investigation is complete.
In a statement released to the media they said:
"Upon becoming aware of the alleged crime, all information was turned over to the East Lansing Police Department. After the conclusion of the investigation, the police will present its findings to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office as part of a complaint and warrant request. Additional information will be released after arraignment and in conjunction with the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office so as not to jeopardize a criminal prosecution.”
The investigation is ongoing at this time.
