Elderly tenant seeks reimbursement following water disaster

JACKSON, Mich. — Mild temperatures created some flooding and plumbing disasters.

A Jackson woman is back home after spending a couple of nights away because the pipes broke in her apartment.

As FOX 47's Cryss Walker tells us, she's hoping to get a small return for what was lost.

After pushing through a bout with no heat last Thursday, Bernadine Thomas says her troubles were escalated after the pipes in her apartment burst over the weekend.

“My whole laundry room was just spewing black water”, Thomas explained.

“Just gunky and I mean it coated everything and I use that room for a little bit of storage.”

Thomas says the maintenance team shut off her water, causing her to rent a room for two nights and putting a dent in her fixed budget.

“I went to a motel that I paid for Saturday night and Sunday night because I had no toilet (use of the toilet no water) and I was just not able to stay here”, Thomas said.

Monday the water was turned back on and a plumber came to fix the damage but there were just some things that were beyond repair.

“It’s stuff that I do use and I can't afford to replace. Thank God I do have some renter's insurance but I've got a $500 deductible”, Thomas continued.

The frustrated tenant told FOX 47 although she has to take a lost on the salvaged items she's hoping property managers will reimburse the room fees.

“I felt like I was forced to purchase something that I can't afford for my own safety and comfort”, Thomas said.

FOX 47 reached out to the property managers at KMG Prestige for comment.

We're still waiting on a call back.
