LANSING, Mich. — Eight kittens are safe and sound all because a mail carrier decided to check out an abandoned box on the side of the road.
"I just was driving my route and I looked over and I thought well that is a tub sitting there. It wasn't there yesterday," The mail carrier who found the abandoned kittens said.
The mail carrier wanted to keep her identity hidden, but said she hopes that others would take the same steps she did.
"Got on my phone looked up the animal control in St. Johns and called them and asked them what I could do to help the cats," Mail carrier said.
Animal control had the Capital Area Humane Society pick up the kittens because they were right around the corner.
"My staff member director of operations went out and found the kittens and they were all inside of a plastic tote and they were already kind of panting and showing signs of stress from the heat," Julia Watson, President and CEO of Capital Area Humane Society, said.
Currently, the kittens are doing very well.
"We're please to report that there really in good condition and we think that it's just going to be a smooth path to adoption at this point," Wilson said.
Unfortunately at this time of year, the humane society sees a lot of abandoned animals.
"I think it's great for the general public to keep there eyes peeled for suspicious looking things like totes sitting out in the middle of a field," Wilson said.
The kittens have been at the shelter for about a day now and still need to get spayed and neutered so they are not available for adoption at this time.
