East Lansing settling billboard lawsuit

LANSING, Mich. — East Lansing is preparing to settle a potentially expensive lawsuit, and it's going to mean more billboards going up around town.

East Lansing is preparing to settle a potentially expensive lawsuit, and it's going to mean more billboards going up around town."I think it's a good result, they get a couple of extra billboards in appropriate locations, and we preserved what we fought so hard to win," Said East Lansing Mayor Mark Meadows.

For years the amount of billboards in East Lansing has been minimal – that’s how the city likes it.

And for years, Adams Outdoor Advertising has tried to get more billboards in the area, and the two parties have been locked in a lawsuit.

"Adams and the city of Cast Lansing have a rich history of litigation," said Meadows. "We spent at least a couple of decades getting the billboards out of there, some of which were Adams billboards.”

But with a settlement, the city would allow Adams to keep three of their existing billboards, and add a few more.

"Sometimes litigation comes to a good result, and we think this is a fairly good result,” Meadows said.

Adams will have the option to use static or digital billboards and will pay rent to the city.

"I think it's a good deal for both parties, which you always hope for in a settlement, but it's a better deal for the city because it ultimately puts an end to this type of litigation," said Meadows.

East Lansing’s city council meets Tuesday to discuss the terms of the settlement.

Meadows says he's expecting a vote, and more billboards in the city.

If approved, Adams will construct billboards near the city’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, the East Lansing Costco, and along US-127 by Coleman Road.
