EAST LANSING, Mich. — East Lansing homeowners say they've been blindsided by the decision to not allow parking on some streets.
It's part of a pilot program that will start this week. East Lansing's statement says narrow streets with parked cars have created a safety issue.
Their pilot program will study the effects of implementing a one-sided parking restriction and it will last for about a year.
The regulations will accommodate city services like trash collection, plowing and emergency crews. Residents say the program is an inconvenience.
"We only have parking on one side so if you have a birthday party, or an open house, or you have any kind of company there's no where for them to park," said Carole Hetherington, an East Lansing resident. "We get a lot of student traffic and if there are no cars parked we think it's gonna turn into a really easy place to speed."
The pilot program is set to start Monday, June 17.
East Lansing residents can learn more about the new parking rules Friday at City Hall. Those meetings are happening Thursday, June 13 at 2:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
