A letter was sent home with East Lansing Public School students on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 to report high levels of lead at seven of the district's buildings.
The testing took place on March 1-9, and April 1-2, and involved over 1,000 water samples, taken by Materials Testing Consultants, Inc. (over 500 devices of faucets and drinking fountains). Two samples from each device were taken.
The letter stated that 31 devices showed levels that were at or above the EPA's action level of 15 parts per billion. It went on to say that most of those 31 devices were in areas that are restricted from student access, like custodial areas, or rooms that are not currently used by students.
As a result of the elevated lead levels, the district has turned off the water supply to the affected devices, and has contacted the Ingham County Health Department to schedule a meeting to create an action plan.
The district is continuing to test samples that involve flushing of the water.
