EL police ask government for armored vehicle

East Lansing is one of 16 communities asking the federal government for an armored military vehicle known as an MRAP.

They're similar to the tracked vehicles President Obama ordered police to return last year in order to reduce tension between police and their communities.

MRAP stands for "Mine-Resistant Ambush-Proof" vehicle. East Lansing and other departments are requesting them with wheels.
Those aren't covered by the President's executive order.

East Lansing Police had no one available to comment on the request today. We'll let you know why the city wants one, as soon as we hear back.
