LANSING, Mich. — People living in two mid-Michigan communities will want to take a look at their water before doing laundry for the next few weeks.
Jackson and East Lansing will start flushing hydrants and water mains on Monday, Sept. 23. Flushing for both will be during the hours of 7:30am - 3pm and will last about three to four weeks.
Crews in Jackson will start flushing hydrants on the city's southwest side, and end in the northeast section of the city.
East Lansing will be flushing water mains in the area west of Abbot Road north of Wolf Court, Gainsborough Drive and Bessemaur Drive within the city's limits.
Remaining sections of the city will be included in future flushing activities.
This semi-annual flushing is necessary to wash iron and other sediment out of the water mains. This sediment does not affect water quality, but can cause water to become discolored. The water is safe to drink and discoloration often disappears within a short time.
Drivers should take it slow where flushing is taking place, while residents are advised not to wash clothing while lines are being flushed in or around their neighborhoods. In addition, it is always advisable to check the color of the water before doing any laundry.
