It's something employees at the Spartan Hall of Fame Cafe will be talking about for a while.
A man drove his pick-up off a highway ramp, smashed into parked cars, and hit cars driving down Lake Lansing Road.
“At first I thought he swerved off the road like normal but then I saw him continue so I assumed that there was something wrong with him,” Cel Bernal, a cook at the café who saw the entire incident unfold.
Bernal was waiting for his shift to begin Wednesday when out of nowhere, a pickup truck drove off the northbound US-127 highway ramp smashing into parked cars outside the café.
“He was coming pretty fast at least 60 miles an hour,” said Bernal. “The way the fence is you can see he jumped on top of it, it crumbled, and he just continued to roll through,” said Bernal.
Like others in the parking lot, Bernal couldn't believe his eyes.
“Everyone was pretty scared especially once he got out the car and you could see his facial expressions that he was just laughing and smiling,” said Bernal.
The cafe's delivery van took a direct hit but it didn't stop there.
The driver would make his way onto Lake Lansing Road where he'd smash into five more cars.
Witnesses that were at the scene tell us the driver told him ‘the devil made him do it.’
“It appears that if he wouldn't have struck the delivery vehicle that was parked in the lot behind hall of fame cafe he may have actually gone into that building with his vehicle,” said Lt. Scott Wrigglesworth of East Lansing Police.
After smashing numerous cars on Lake Lansing Road, the suspect then fled on foot to the nearby Hampton Inn location.
The clerk inside tells Fox 47 News the driver asked for the room number ‘666’.
The driver also damaged two fire alarms on the second and third floor.
“It appears that maybe prescription medication or some sort of narcotic played a role in what happen,” said Wrigglesworth.
East Lansing Police would later arrest the driver which would bring an end to a rather odd morning commute.
“It could have ended up being a one car accident, but ended up being a multiple car accident and only one fairly minor injury from that accident so we're thankful for that,” said Wrigglesworth.
The driver is a 25-year-old man.
He's now under evaluation in East Lansing police custody.
It’s possible the driver could face charges.
