UPDATE: Police identify man killed in crash

Michigan State Police have identified a man who died in a crash after fleeing a traffic stop in Jackson.

19-year-old Devin Young, of Jackson died after he lost control of the SUV he was driving and crashed into a tree. The impact caused the SUV to burst into flames. It is not known at this time if Young died on impact, or as a result of the fire.

A Jackson County Sheriff's deputy had stopped Young around 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2016 on Francis Street in Jackson, but Young drove away as the deputy approached his vehicle. He drove south and his SUV went off the road, hitting a tree near the intersection of Francis and Trumble.

Young was on parole for assaulting a police officer at the time of the crash. Police have no information as to why he drove away from the traffic stop. The State Police say they aren't aware of any warrants out for his arrest at the time of the crash. Police searched his vehicle and found no evidence of a firearm, or ammunition.


State Police tell us they will have to use dental records to a identify the driver of a deadly crash.


Authorities say a driver who sped away from a traffic stop in Jackson has died after losing control of the SUV he was driving and crashing into a tree.

Jackson County sheriff's deputy had stopped the driver just after 4:30 p.m. Monday on Francis Street near Overhill but as the deputy approached the SUV the driver took off.

Based on initial findings, police say the suspect fled scene south on Francis Street and was driving erratically, leading the vehicle to leave the road at least once.

The vehicle left the road a second time and eventually collided with a tree near the intersection of Francis and Trumble.

The impact caused extensive damage and the vehicle quickly became engulfed in flames..

Police say they believe the driver was killed on impact or shortly afterward. His name wasn't immediately released.
