Dog owner of lost pet talks about reuniting after 4 years

Posted

A Lansing man speaks on-camera for the first time about reuniting with his long-lost dog after four years.

FOX 47's Cryss Walker tells us how technology helped a family find the dog they thought they'd never see again.

Imagine losing your fur-ever friend and finding your pet over 100 miles away.

Well, that's exactly what happened to Bradley Weiferich when his dog Bam ran away from home in 2014.

“Without the microchip she wouldn't be back with us today and with the condition she was in there's a very good chance she wouldn't be alive today”, said Weiferich.

The Pitbull owner said last Friday he received a phone call that he'll never forget.

“First I thought it was a prank phone call”, Weiferich explained.

“I received a phone call about five minutes later from the microchip company Avid and when I received that phone call I knew that it was for real.”

The Weiferich family packed up and drove to the Lucas County Canine Care and Control Animal Shelter in Toledo, Ohio where Bradley found his long lost dog emaciated and unrecognizable.

“When we picked her up she was about 40, 44, 45 pounds, which is roughly 20 to 25 pounds under weight for a dog her size”, Weiferich continued.

The owner of the 12-year-old dog says that Bam immediately recognized him and from there, her journey back home began.

A journey Weiferich says he is grateful for.

According to Ingham County Animal Control, the majority of animals who stray away never find their way back home.

The shelter says I.D. tags and microchips can help get your pet back home safely.
