Police say a 5-year-old girl has been critically injured after being attacked by several dogs at a Detroit home.

Police say the girl was playing with the dogs Tuesday night inside the home on the city's east side and then went outside, where they mauled her.

She was taken to a hospital, where police say she was in critical condition. Police said it wasn't immediately clear how many dogs were involved in the attack.

Deputy Chief Renee Hall says the dogs' owner had previously been warned about failing to turn over the animals following an earlier attack. She says he knew the dogs "had some level of aggression and he should have taken the necessary precautions."

Broadcasters report the man was taken into custody on earlier arrest warrants.
