The Detroit Board of Education has adopted a new policy allowing the Detroit Public Schools Community District to rename buildings named after living people.
The policy says the board can rename a school if the education community believes the name no longer represents the area's culture or population.
The policy also requires future structures to only be named after deceased people.
No action was taken to change any names after Tuesday's decision.
Board member LaMar Lemmons says the board should consider renaming Dr. Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine.
He says the name should be revisited because it was chosen by a former emergency financial manager and not by the elected board.
Lemmons says he also takes issue with Carson's political stances and affiliations.
