ALAIEDON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A man was hospitalized with serious injuries after his car burst into flames after crashing off I-96 in Alaiedon Township.

Police tell Fox 47 that the man is from Bridgeport and is in critical condition.

The Ingham County Sheriff's Office responded to the crash near the Mason, Okemos Exit at midnight on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

Preliminary investigation shows the male driver, in his 20s, fell asleep at the wheel.

The man's car went off I-96, down an embankment and crashed into trees.

The car caught fire and was fully engulfed when emergency crews responded to the scene.

The driver was able to crawl out of the car and was found lying in the grass nearby.

He was transported to Sparrow Hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries, deputies said.

Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash.

No one else was in the car and no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
