Democrats release GOP health care recordings

New Monday, tapes of republicans talking about their health care agenda. FOX 47's Alani Letang breaks down the story for you.

Democrats say the recordings show the Republican health care plan is to cut coverage. But Republicans say the tapes back up their position that health care should be about personal choice.

In a recording from 6/26/17:

CITIZEN: I have to pay for my own health care, and this whole essential health benefits thing coming with Obamacare is really making me pay a lot more because I'm paying for maternity care, I -

BILL SCHUETTE: Which is stupid.

CITIZEN: Yeah, it's really dumb.

That person asking Gubernatorial candidate Bill Schuette about having maternity care included in his insurance policy was sent in by the Michigan Democratic party.
It's one reason Republicans say the whole thing is ridiculous.

"So asking leading questions, then taking the answers out of context its political gamesmanship and total garbage," said Sarah Anderson-Communications Director for the Michigan Republican Party.

Anderson said it's a sign of desperation and just an attempt to make Republicans look bad.
she told me the party wants people to be able to have a plan that fits them best, not one size fits all.

"The idea of a single man having to have mandatory maternity coverage just seemed kind of silly to me, and I don't think that a woman should necessarily have to have coverage to cover prostate exams," said State Representative Jeff Noble, (R) Frankenmuth, in a recording from 5/8/17.

But Democrats say the recordings prove republicans are hostile to women's health care.

"We are going to go back to the time pre-ACA where people got junk insurance plans and were forced into bankruptcy," said the Michigan Democratic Party.

And they said the recordings back up that opinion.

"If we choose not to get a particular coverage and get the illness, then we're the ones that have to deal with that," said Noble from 5/8/17.

Letang has reached out to Bill Schuette's office, a spokesperson told her they have no comment at this point. Letang has also reached out others on the recording and hasn't heard back yet.
