Have you ever wanted to be a police officer? Or maybe just wondered what it's like to walk the beat?
Members of the community that want to find that out can apply to be part of the East Lansing Police Department’s (ELPD) 2018 Citizens’ Police Academy.
Eligible applicants include anyone 18 and older who is affiliated with the City of East Lansing, whether they are full-time residents, students, business owners or others with a community connection The deadline to apply is December 20, 2017.
The East Lansing Police Department is looking for a diverse cross-section of the community to be part of the 2018 course.
It's ten weeks long and designed to give citizens a working knowledge of the police department.
During the course, people will be assisting the ELPD of the issues and concerns of the community.
There is classroom work and hands-on instruction. and covers a different part of the police department each week. The course will even include an ELPD K9 Unit demonstration.
The Citizens’ Police Academy is free and open to all who are eligible.
Background checks will be conducted on those applying.
The academy will run for 10 weeks, meeting from 6-8 p.m. every Tuesday from Jan. 9-March 20. The group will meet in the ELPD Emergency Operations Center, 409 Park Lane.
