The 21-year-old son of Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert is to have brain surgery this week.
Nick Gilbert is a student at Michigan State. The team says the operation will be done in Detroit.
The younger Gilbert became a cult hero in 2011 when he represented the Cavs at the NBA draft lottery and the team won the first overall pick.
He was born with a genetic disorder that causes tumors.
