PORTLAND, Mich. — Crews in Portland are preparing for this weekend’s weather.

The Ionia County Sheriff's Office is working with police and the city's emergency management team.

They are waiting to see what mother nature brings.

However, they are ready in case the ice starts moving in the river.

The sheriff's office says most affected people have already been evacuated.

Their main concern right now is keeping an eye on the rivers.

"Mother nature is going to do what mother nature is going to do. We can't stop an entire river. The biggest thing and the best thing we can do is to make sure that citizens of Portland are informed as much as possible," said Ionia County Undersheriff Andrew Bucholtz.

In that worst-case scenario, the sheriff's office says they will be forced to close bridges and divert traffic.

Officials say they are in close contact with the National Weather Service, tracing this weekend's weather.
