LANSING, Mich. — Crews have started work to restore seven monuments at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lansing.
A group known as the "Friends of Lansing's Historic Cemeteries" hired a conservator to handle the project.
The preservation includes work to level the ground, patch pieces of the monuments back together and fill in gaps on the monuments with specialized material.
"It just takes a little physical labor and you know the passion, try to preserve our history," David Carter said.
Three of the chosen monuments belong to the first family known to have settled in Lansing, Jacob Cooley, his wife Lucy and their daughter Adelia.
Another belongs to the infant daughter of Lansing's second Mayor, John A. Kerr.
