JACKSON, Mich. — A no-fee ATM attracted Summer Washington to stop and make a withdrawal at the American 1 Credit Union on North Street in Jackson, but it's a transaction that ended up costing her $140.
“I get a text message that said I only had a $1.95 in my account and I was like, wait, what…” Washington explained.
American One Credit Union managers say they believe a skimmer was used to steal card information from 600 ATM users in Jackson.
Washington told Cryss Walker last week she made a stop and withdrew a large amount of cash to pay bills, leaving her with a $140 balance.
A balance that was cleaned-out by a thief who stopped at an ATM in the Detroit area with her card information.
“I don't care if it was $140, I don't care if it was 10 cents, it's my money so don't take my money”, Washington said.
“I'm a hard worker. I'm a single mother taking care of two small children on my own. I can't afford to lose anything.”
American One Credit Union released a statement to News 10 saying a device was installed at an undisclosed ATM location that copied card information and went undetected for days.
The credit union was slammed with reports of fraudulent activity Sunday and opened their doors on President's Day to resolve the issue by shutting off cards and restoring funds.
American One Credit Union says its customers were fully refunded.
Account holders from different banking institutions must contact their bank to file a fraud claim.
