Council to vote on recreational marijuana sales

LANSING, Mich. — On the docket for Monday's city council meeting in Lansing is recreational marijuana where council members are set to vote on changes to Lansing's marijuana ordinance.

The recreational marijuana ordinance has been reviewed by the public safety committee for two months, and if council passes the measure it can be in place by the state's November first deadline.

The new rules would amend the medical marijuana ordinance, adopted by council in 2017, to allow recreational marijuana to be sold.

This ordinance deals with zoning, meaning there are certain places where recreational marijuana shops can set-up in the city.

In addition, it would allow 4 marijuana social clubs within the city.

Here are the big three changes...

Up to four dispensaries will be able to sell medical and recreational pot.

Another option is micro-businesses: One per ward that grows up to 150 plants, those plants will be processed and sold at the proposed location.

The last change is consuming shops where people can smoke or consumer edibles.

The ordinance will only allow four locations...or one per ward.

Council President Carol Wood said, "The city had to finalize the changes in time to meet the state's deadline."

"We have three choices. One would have been to opt out and not allow any recreational marijuana. Two was to create an ordinance that limited what would be able to happen in the City of Lansing, and three... if we did nothing, anyone who has a state license throughout the state of Michigan could have gotten a license through the state here in Lansing for anything, so that would have meant we would have opened Pandora's box."

That meeting is set to start tonight at 7 p.m.
