JACKSON, Mich. — Landlords will have to pay for relocation assistance for tenants who are forced to move out of their homes in the city of Jackson due to unsafe living conditions.
The Jackson City Council passed the ordinance 4-3 at a meeting on Feb. 12.
Councilmembers postponed a vote on the measure on Jan. 29.
Under the ordinance, landlords have to find and pay for temporary housing if their properties are deemed unfit to live in.
The city will pay for housing for tenants for the first five days but after that, the landlord would have to reimburse the city and they can be kept on the hook for the cost up to 90 days.
The ordinance goes into effect in 30 days.
Councilmembers also set a special meeting for Thursday, Feb. 28. The special meeting was set up for a hearing to take place on a proposal to rename Francis Street in the City of Jackson for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
