JACKSON COUNTY, Mich. — The next phase of a major construction project in Jackson County is officially underway.

The work could inconvenience drivers for the next several months.

The bridge that connects I-94 to downtown Jackson is closed so it can be torn down and then rebuilt.

The work is part of the $109 million I-94 construction project throughout Jackson County.

The closure of the Cooper Street bridge over I-94 is expected to last for six months with a new bridge slated to be built and open by Mid-September.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says construction will happen in stages to minimize the impact to drivers.

They'll be re-routed around the project from Parnall Road to U.S. 127 to West Avenue, then West Michigan Avenue and back to Cooper Street.

It may be best to find a different way around until the work is done.

I-94 will close for two nights once crews are ready to demolish the bridge.

Right now another bridge is already under construction west of the Grand River.

The new Cooper Street bridge will be part of the redesigned I-94 - Cooper Street interchange that will include new roundabouts on each side of the bridge.

The I-94 reconstruction project is expected to be done by spring of next year.
