Controversy over cross on state property

Posted

A cross located on Sackrider Hill has been there for almost 70 years, however, the Michigan Association of Civil Rights Activists (MACRA) is demanding its removal after receiving a complaint from a long-time resident.

The people of Grass Lake are familiar with the cross and many have even visited it, but one neighbor does not share the same love for the icon.

Mitch Kahle, Co-Founder of MACRA said, "The main problem in this case is that this is a government-owned cross on government property."

Others in Grass Lake think nothing of the cross. Kathleen Champagne owns the Portage Lake Parlor in town and thinks the cross is harmless.

"As far as the religious aspect, I think people should go and enjoy it if they'd like to and if they don't, they don't have to," she told FOX 47.

FOX 47's Megan Hiler will have the full story on the cross controversy on WILX at 10:00 PM.
