LANSING, Mich. — A heads up for Consumers Energy customers.

The utility says as it starts getting warmer outside, some of their customers may see an increase in their utility bills.

Consumers Energy is offering a solution-they're rolling out a program called 'Summertime Use Of Rate.'

Consumers says the cost of electricity will go up from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays from June to September. They say electricity used during those times can be as much as 100 times more expensive than during non-peak hours.

Here's where the program comes in:
Consumers is asking people to cut back on their energy use from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.

They say that can be done by getting air conditioning units tuned up and using a programmable thermostat. They also say closing your curtains will help.

"Turn off the lights, make sure you have energy efficient lights," said Brian Wheeler, a Spokesman for Consumers Energy. "Make sure that you're doing the dishes off peak hours, or the laundry off peak hours."

Consumers Energy says by doing this, customers will have more control over their electricity use. Customers can even lower their monthly bill.

Consumers says cutting back will reduce electricity demand and that can help the environment.

Right now, Consumers Energy has selected certain communities to begin using the rate this summer. They're currently reaching out to those customers.

They say by next year everyone will be on the new plan.
