Consumers Energy crews prepare for severe weather

Consumers Energy crews are preparing for the possibility of severe weather today. The Jackson-based utility company tells us there are hundreds of workers on standby.

The big concern today is high winds blowing trees and debris onto power lines knocking out power and causing outages in the area.

Spokesman Brian Wheeler says the utility company is in "storm mode" right now. "It is unusual to be expecting high winds and thunderstorms in February, but that's the situation we're at here and if people are prepared that is a good start" says Wheeler.

Area residents are advised to charge cell phones and electronics today before the storm hits. Keep flashlights and a portable radio nearby. Call Consumers Energy immediately to report a power outage or a downed power line.

Customers can also visit Consumer Energy's outage map online to report an outage or to check to see when power will be restored.
