Construction begins on new affordable senior center

JACKSON, Mich. — Construction is underway at a new senior living center in Jackson, but it's not just another apartment building.

The Francis Senior Lofts will make living easier for Jackson’s senior citizens.

"There's really not a lot of facilities for seniors that want to live independently in an apartment or in an urban-like setting," said Jackson City Spokesperson Aaron Dimick.

Once the Francis Senior Lofts open, living life won't be as difficult for Jackson’s senior citizens.

Each of the 45 units will be income-based; the less a tenant makes, the less they'll have to pay.

It's an option that not a lot of older people in Jackson have.

"There was really only one affordable senior living development," said Pete Schwiegeraht, Senior Vice President of Development for MVAH Partners, who is developing the property. "The existing development that was there was 100 percent occupied, and the waiting list might have been almost 100 people, 90 people long, there was certainly a need in the community."

The lofts are one of a few new housing developments going up in the downtown area.

And just like those other buildings, they'll bring the city-and everything it has to offer-to older people who might struggle getting to the city on a day-to-day basis.

"You have all the community service things right there, you have the court, county and local government, access to parks, transportation, we really want to build up that environment, and the more people we have living downtown, it's going to build up the rest of the community," said Dimick.

The plan is to make the Francis Senior Lofts cater to seniors struggling to get around in their old age by adding amenities like an elevator and wheelchair-friendly floor plans.

"This is going to allow for aging in place, and allow people in Jackson to stay in Jackson as their needs for senior housing come to be," said Schwiegeraht.

Schwiegeraht says leasing will be open to the public about six months before Francis Senior Lofts opens; he expects that to be in late spring of next year.
