LANSING, Mich. — The state's surplus store will be open on Saturday, July 13, to the public for a limited time.
The State Surplus sells items seized by police, airport security, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
This event only happens twice a year and it's great for bargain shoppers.
Prices for tools, knives, earbuds, and bicycles come at a really cheap cost.
Ron Turner, State Surplus Supervisor said, "We're not here to try to make a profit. The money that comes from this actually goes back into state surplus to help support the program."
They will accept cash, debit cards, and credit cards, however, they will not accept American Express or checks.
The state surplus receives a lot of its items from the Detroit Airport.
They get a monthly shipment of items from the airport and a bi-monthly shipment from Grand Rapids Airport.
Although a lot of the items have been seized from authorities, there are also a lot of items that were left behind at airports, such as suitcases and sunglasses, but a lot of the suitcases are filled with clothes.
And as a way to continue spreading the generosity, State Surplus donates any clothes they find to local donation centers.
The event is only open to the public on Saturday, July 13 from 8 a.m. to noon.
Anytime past that given time, the public will not be allowed in the store.
The store is located at 3111 W. St Joseph, building 600 in Lansing.
Turner mentioned in the past people have been waiting at the gate to get in at 4:30 in the morning.
Anyone on a budget looking for nice items for their home, purse, or garage might find what they need at this sale.
One item that is going to go quick is the generator.
Turner said its one of the highlight items but get there fast because Turner said it will sell fast.
And if making the sale doesn't fit into the schedule, the State Surplus has an online auction websitewith items they've received.
The website runs 24/7 and anyone is welcome to bid online.
