Community reacts to mountain lion taking up residence in Bath Township

The DNR has confirmed a 100lb, 5 foot long mountain lion is lurking out near rose lake in Bath Township.

"That's kind of nuts to be honest,” Collin Merell, a Bath Township resident said,

"Knowing that something like that is on the loose and knowing I live right up against the woods is kinda pretty scary," William Gilbert, a Bath Township resident said.

Because mountain lions are predators.

"Could potentially snatch a child or something," Gilbert said.

"You know I've got young kids and it makes me kind of think, is it safe for them to even be outside playing?" Trent Morr, a Bath Township resident said.

It'd be extremely rare according to the DNR But if you came face to face with one... Would you know what to do?

"I couldn't tell you to be honest, I don't know what I'd do," Merell said.

"Probably try to contact some authorities," Gilbert said.

"I would probably pray. And calmly back up and go in my house,” Pam Bellon, who lives in Bath Township said. “I would not scream because it'd probably come after me."

The DNR says the best thing to do is to try to look bigger and make loud noises to scare it off.

"You don't want to play dead,” Chad Fedewa, a wildlife biologist with the DNR said. “Don't run, don't crouch down and don't try to invoke any instinct it would have to chase or try to do any harm to anybody."

It's illegal to hurt a cougar unless it's in self-defense. They're an endangered species in Michigan. So don't go trying to hunt it.
