For Keyes Log Cabin Party Store, it was a tough start to Thanksgiving.
"It's very terrifying," says DJ, one of the owners.
They say they've never experienced anything like what happened on Wednesday night.
"We've been here for the last, like, 18 years, and it never happened."
Police say three men came in and shot the cashier in the neck just after 9 PM on Wednesday night. Thanksgiving morning, the community has been coming out to show their support for the store and its owners.
"I always felt like everybody that worked within these stores in this neighborhood was together, so they are his family," says Martelle Young, who knew the clerk.
A family that's astounded with what happened.
"Who would kill somebody on Thanksgiving?" asks an incredulous Devon Glenn. "The night before Thanksgiving, who would do that for a few dollars? It's worthless. You took a good life, a good person, and we don't accept that here in our community."
The victim was affectionately called Jo-Jo by the owners, and people who go to the store say he was a great person in the community.
"He's such a nice man," says Graeg Macinder. "Always friendly, kind, always gave the little children free candy, gave the older women, and people, free newspapers, he was always very smiling, friendly, and nice."
"This man probably had, you know, thoughts of waking up, sending ties to his family, or you know, coming to the store and servicing the community. Whatever the situation was it wasn't worth it," explains Young.
Owners say the victim was in Jackson working to support his family back home in India.
