Community rallies to get diapers to families

Posted

One in three American families struggle every day with "diaper need," not having enough diapers to get by. In Mid-Michigan, it's no different.

But, this weekend, the community is coming together in the hopes of changing that.

The Mid-Michigan diaper bank is teaming up with the Lansing Doula to organize the "No Child Wet Behind" 5K in Holt Saturday.

The goal of the race is to raise money and awareness that some families in our area struggle with the choice of buying food or buying diapers.

The Mid-Michigan Diaper Bank supplies local agencies like the Homeless Angels and the Bath Senior Center with diapers.

It can cost families around $80 per month per child. For some low income families, that $80 might need to go instead towards food or transportation, leaving babies in the same diaper for long periods of time.

"Diaper need is a real, basic need for these families with babies, toddlers," says Theresa Walz with the Mid-Michigan diaper bank,

Now, even the White House is addressing the "diaper gap."

The new program, which gives low-income families access to diapers for just 25% the cost, began in April. It's made possible by a collaboration with Jet.com. The site is helping non-profits buy and get diapers quickly.

If you want to help, donations in the form of diapers or cash are accepted. You can also come to Saturday's race. The race begins at 9 a.m. at Valhalla Park at 4000 Keller Road in Holt.
