Dozens of people gathered at the Old Orchard Apartment complex in Holt Wednesday night to mourn a five-year-old girl who died there in a homicide-arson case.

Firefighters found the girl's body after putting out a fire inside an apartment on Tuesday night.

The Ingham County Sheriff's Office says the girl died of trauma not caused by the fire.

A 25-year-old man, who had a relationship with the girl's mother, has been taken into custody.

The sheriff's office will ask the prosecutor for warrants for murder and arson-related crimes on Thursday.

The girl's identity has not been released, but officials say she was a student in the Holt Public Schools system.

Holt Superintendent Dave Hornak says a crisis team and other resources will be available for students Thursday morning.
