Lansing’s City Council says people abusing collection bins and using them like dumpsters to get rid of trash and furniture.
FOX 47's Cryss Walker was at Monday night’s meeting where council members talked about tightening-up the rules and regulations.
Lansing City Council President Carol Wood says bins that are meant for recycling and donations are starting to look like dump sites.
“These containers tipped over with garbage, you see animals getting into them all of those things”, Wood explained.
“It makes the city and our neighborhoods look as if they're blighted property.”
The council president told FOX 47 Monday night that residents are tired of collection bins being misused in Lansing.
“Because of the number of complaints that we received from the public is the reason why we decided that it was important”, Wood continued.
Wood says the council is expected to explore ideas that includes ticketing and other enforcement measures to let people know that the violations are unacceptable.
The Lansing City Council Committee on Public Safety will draft an ordinance to modify and expand how the city will regulate collection bins.
A public hearing on the issue will take August 13th.
