Several parents are outraged after learning by letter that a student brought a gun to Chippewa Middle School in Okemos Monday.

According to the letter sent to parents Monday night, "school officials learned around 4:30 p.m. that a student was in possession of a weapon."

The school says the principal immediately called the Meridan Township Police Department who assisted in the investigation and made contact with the student and their family.

Meridian Township police determined the weapon was a handgun and the department is now in possession of the weapon.

The letter says "the student reported bringing the weapon to school to show their peers. This student will not be returning to Chippewa Middle School."

School officials say they will follow the Okemos Board of Education's Weapon-Free School Zone Policy to determine legal and the district's court of action.

Teachers will read the letter to students during their first hour on Tuesday morning.

“We feel it is important to utilize this situation as a reminder to all on reporting safety concerns immediately as school safety is our collective responsibility,” the letter reads.

FOX 47 has reached out to the school and Meridian Township police for more information but we've not heard back at this time.
