The students at Elliott Elementary got a surprise visit on Thursday from the Ingham County Sheriff's Department.

The school had entered a naming contest for the newest member of the department, specifically the canine unit, and on Thursday they found out that they won.

Third-grader Rem Piper, from Mrs. Klauka's class, picked the name, Gage. It was chosen out of over 20 entries.

“A lot of people high fived me I didn't know, I just, it's super surprising that this is happening,” Rem said.

The prize also included a pizza party for the entire class and a visit from Gage and his handler. The student also received a plaque that had his entry and a picture of Gage on it.

Gage is a 2-year-old black Lab and his handler is Deputy Troy Orweller. They are assigned to corrections and have worked together since mid-November.
