City of Lansing votes to pass new ordinance

It's a decision more than a year in the making. The Lansing city council passed an ordinance to regulate medical marijuana. The ordinance will restrict how many dispensaries can operate in the city, how licensing them would work, and where they can open up shop.

The plan is to cap the number that can operate around to 25.
There are currently about 70 medical marijuana dispensaries up and running right now.

Council member Carol Wood said she feels like the vote was rushed.

"Not having the public be able to look at the final document in a timely manner- I think all are major issues and so as I said, I think where we are tonight is disappointing," she said.

Mayor Virg Bernero issued a statement on the issue saying he commends the city council for passing the ordinance.

He said the passage will: " Ensure quality product to those in need, help create hundreds of jobs, and unleash millions of dollars in new investments in our city.

During the committee of the whole meeting, the possibility of limiting dispensaries to a certain amount per ward was shot down, but they decided to keep drive through access at dispensaries.

Some of the public felt the vote was rushed since they voted on a new draft the same day.
