City begins construction of new entrance to Groesbeck Golf Course

Posted

Work has begun on construction of a new entrance to Groesbeck Golf Course from Grand River Avenue through Ormond Park, city officials announced today. The new entrance to the city-owned facility is part of Mayor Virg Bernero’s three-point strategy to reduce the golf course’s substantial financial losses.

The mayor’s plan includes the new entrance that will redirect golf-related traffic away from neighborhood streets and improve public access to the course, transferring management of golf operations from the city’s Parks and Recreation Department to the Lansing Entertainment and Public Facilities Authority (LEPFA), and construction of a new outdoor event space adjacent to the existing clubhouse that will allow Groesbeck to host more events.

The new entrance is being built in part on land that was acquired by the city in 1989 specifically to create a new entrance to the golf course through Ormond Park. The acquisition of the land for this purpose was unanimously approved by the City Council at that time.

The project has met with opposition from several city residents who live near Ormond Park, but Mayor Bernero said he believes the new entrance is in the best interest of the majority of Lansing citizens – and the city’s finances.
