EATON COUNTY, Mich. — The Eaton County Prosecutor says the shooting by a Charlotte police officer was justified.
A woman has been charged in the January incident involving the police officer at a Charlotte residence.
Taylor Danielle Lahr, a 25-year-old former Charlotte resident, was charged with four felonies and a misdemeanor from the incident in the 100 block of Fourth Street, near Cochran Avenue,
in Charlotte.
Lahr was arraigned in the Eaton County District Court on two charges of first-degree home invasion, a felony of up to 20 years and/or $5,000 fine; assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, a felony of up to 10 years or $5,000 fine; telephone communication interference, a felony of up to two years and/or $1,000 fine and aggravated assault, a misdemeanor of up to one year and/or $1,000 fine.
The charges are in relation to the assault on her mother, 63-year-old Jamie Curtis, and committing larceny and possessing a handgun.
Lahr is still in the Eaton County jail awaiting a probable cause conference on Feb. 11 and a preliminary examination on Feb. 15.
Her bond was set at $500,000 by Eaton County District Court Judge Julie Reincke.
Curtis had a current restraining order against Lahr at the time of the fight, according to a police report.
The Charlotte police officer who shot Lahr will not face charges.
The prosecutor said it is clear that Lahr presented an "immediate danger of great bodily harm or death to Sgt. Paul Brentar," and Officer Jeremy Hafner acted properly in the defense of his colleague when he shot Lahr.
“Despite the impression that Hollywood regularly gives us, police shootings are extraordinarily rare. Each time, the officer must make a split-second decision to do something they are trained for yet do not want to do – shoot at a person. When that person is pointing a handgun at a fellow officer, especially after that person has committed a violent physical assault on a senior citizen, the decision to shoot in defense of others was reasonable,” Eaton County Prosecutor Douglas Lloyd said.
