LANSING, Mich. — A Charlotte family is out of a couple hundred dollars and left with questions after their cars were rummaged through.

One of the victims involved tells News 10 she and her family were completely caught off guard. They noticed things were missing and thanks to their Ring security camera, saw the whole thing go down.

Makenzie Cochran says she’s always felt safe in her cozy Charlotte neighborhood.

“It’s very quiet,” said Cochran. “There’s a bunch of old folks that live around us a bunch of children too.”

That is until her dad woke up one morning and noticed things were missing from his car.

“He goes to his Ring because we do have cameras all over our house. He went to the Ring and he saw this man walk up on our driveway and this man just got into his car. And then I check my car, my wallet was completely open. My purse was actually lifted upside down like they had rummaged through it,” said Cochran.

It was a crime of opportunity.

“I thought I locked my car. We actually park in the garage but we were having a garage sale so he must’ve just forgot to lock it,” said Cochran.

Over $150 in cash and even more on debit cards was taken.

“I know that we shouldn’t have that in our cars but we felt like we had no concern,” said Cochran.

She says they went door to door to alert neighbors.

“Majority of them were super confused. They were like what in this neighborhood,” said Cochran.

Their neighbor Jan also has a Ring security camera.
There’s an app that goes with the camera where you can see nearby incidents in your area.
Jan was alerted while she was far away on Mackinac Island.

“All of our cars are in the garage and they’re always locked but so many people don’t have room in their garage and you know it only takes once to not lock your car too,” said Jan.

Now that it happened Cochran says they’re just waiting on Charlotte police and hoping they’ll be helpful after getting no answers from them.

“The police need to start taking things more seriously with what goes on in Charlotte because it is a small community,” said Cochran.

We contacted Charlotte police. They told us they are still investigating.

There was also a car theft in the area. That car is a 2011 white Buick Regal with a metal detector in the back.

Call Charlotte police if you have any helpful information.
