A 47-year-old man was arrested at 5 am this morning in Garden City in connection with the hit and run that killed Wayne County Sheriff Sgt. Lee Smith Tuesday morning in Hines Park.
Sources tell FOX 47 News the man appears to have been under the influence and he told police where to find the Buick Enclave that had extensive front-end damage.
It was found on Michigan Avenue near Inkster Road at 6 am. Sgt. Smith was off duty and jogging in the park when a car crossed over the center line and hit him.
The case will go to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, and charges could be issued on Friday. The man remains in jail.
Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon says a tipster helped them locate the driver and that person should be eligible for reward money that totals $15,000.
Sgt. Lee Smith was a 26 year veteran of the Sheriff’s office and was in charge of the mounted unit. His wife declined to comment today.
The Sheriff says his funeral is tentatively set for August 24.
