EAST LANSING, Mich. — The inside westbound lane of Michigan Avenue in East Lansing is closed due to a road base failure.

The closure affects the portion of the road immediately west of Harrison Road.

Drivers likely will see the lane blocked off and a board over the area.

There's a cavity under the road but it isn't clear what caused it, said Ron Lacasse, infrastructure administrator for the East Lansing Department of Public Works.

Lacasse said the department doesn't think it's a water main break as there isn't any water. He said there also are no problems with utilities.

The road in that area had started to settle but it isn't a hole. When they drilled into the pavement, they found a cavity below the surface.

The cavity is about 12 feet long, 8 feet wide and 4 feet deep, Lacasse said.

The lane closure will be in effect through the beginning of next week while the city and the Michigan Department of Transportation look into the problem.

DPW is investigating.
